The first couple of things that come to my mind when thinking about what makes Stefano the unique Stefano Bollani I know is his intelligence and very quick humor; his extremes - in the serious and the comic. He is capable of great sensitivity and jovial wackiness from one moment to the next. I think he has an amazing store of Italian songs in his memory too which of course adds to his unique make up. For example, I remember one night before a gig we were in the dressing room together and he was playing song after song of old and new Italian songs. Singing the lyrics all the way thru with complete conviction and gusto. Song after song. I lost count how many he went thru. That music is part of his DNA. So when you combine all the above with a great facility on his instrument, you get il signore Stefano Bollani.

He could have had a great career as a stand-up comic. I once heard him, at a midnight concert after Christmas at the Umbria winter festival in Orvieto, play an astonishing rhapsodic 20-minute prologue that turned out to have been “Jingle Bells” from the start, but only Bollani knew it. Yet on albums like The Third Man with Enrico Rava, he is capable of the quietest, most ethereal poetry. Very few musicians can make you laugh so hard you fall out of your chair one minute, and break your heart the next.

Non so se in Spagna conoscete Fregoli, per noi è il più celebre dei trasformisti, un formidabile talento nel saper mutare aspetto. Bollani è inafferrabile nelle sue tante mutazioni. Per qualcuno sono troppe. In realtà, almeno così credo, questa è la vera essenza del suo fenomeno. Essere rigoroso e negare il rigore. Tutto questo scatenato da una sensibilità insolita dominata da una forsennata voglia di essere capito (ma non è questa la missione di ogni artista?), senza per questo rinunciare alle sue idee. Ha un talento musicale unico. Ma oltre a ciò è una persona colta, intelligente,creativa ed è dotato di una memoria incredibile. Ha la capacità unica di saper entrare con naturalezza in qualunque situazione. Dal Jazz più ortodosso al free jazz. Suona musica brasiliana meglio di qualunque pianista brasiliano e può fare un tango cone neanche i grandi maestri di Buenos Aitres. E' anche uno straordinario interprete di musica classica. Non credo ci sia un altro pianista come lui oggi.

Citando Whitman "Mi contraddico? Certo che mi contraddico. Sono vasto, contengo moltitudini..." ecco, Stefano è tutto... straordinario pianista, permorfer... giocoliere, funambolo della tastiera e della parola, teatrale e ironico teatrante può permettersi tutto, gli viene perdonato tutto a volte ho pensato che il suo "di più" nei concerti abbia anche nociuto al godimento della musica ma gli ha regalato una vasta eco, l'attenzione dei media e di un pubblico fuori da ogni confine, un successo che può soltanto allargarsi è un grandissimo musicista che non ha ancora realizzato il grande disco ma sperimenta, rischia, si perde e si ritrova, diverte e si diverte... e forse questo è più importante, almeno per l'uomo Bollani un visionario, un artista... per fortuna un artista e non un professionista seriale.
